Part of the Regulation/Enforcement Unit, the Charities section is responsible for the
registration of all charitable organizations and fundraisers who solicit contributions in
the state. The unit is also responsible for the investigation of charities
complaints and/or violations of the state's charities laws. Strong enforcement of
these charities laws protects the good names of the many selfless groups in our
state. The unit carries out these functions under the authority granted to it by
Mississippi Code Annotated, 79-11-501 et seq.
(1972).
In an effort to educate the citizens of Mississippi on making informed choices when
contributing to charitable organizations, this unit published the first Report on
Charitable Organizations in Mississippi. This report was designed to increase
awareness and understanding of charitable organizations serving the people of Mississippi.
The report lists all registered charities in good standing as of the reporting date and
includes such information as the charity name, address and telephone number, the expenses
and income for the most recently completed year as on file with this office, and the
percentage of total expenses spent on charitable and non-charitable purposes. The report
also has a section which includes the exempt charitable organizations that have
filed an
exemption notice with this office.
