FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2008 CONTACT: Pamela Weaver, (601) 270-4100 Wilkinson County Elections “Extremely Troubling”Jackson, MS—Attached is a copy of the Office of the Secretary of State’s findings and reports on the recent Wilkinson County elections. “What we found was extremely troubling,” says Secretary Hosemann. “Our observers found numerous and flagrant violations in the electoral process.” On the heels of several election contests filed by several Wilkinson county candidates, litigation resulted over the outcome of the August 2007 special election. Judge James Persons ordered new elections “due to…the failure to provide security for the ballot boxes in the manner required by the state election laws…resulting in the total loss of security of the ballot boxes…” and requested the Secretary of State assist two Special Masters in their duties of supervising the special elections by, “provid[ing] personnel to act as poll watchers or monitors in each of the nine (9) precincts for both the special primary and general election.” In response, Secretary Hosemann dispatched 13 staff members to Wilkinson County. The Report of Election Activities: Wilkinson County Special Democratic Primary has been sent to the United States Attorney for the Southern District and to the Attorney General.
